CHRISTMAS IS COMING
Christmas is coming, the sorrel getting red
Time to make fruit cake and bake bread
Painting and cleaning on top of the lists
And who like stomach, in butterball bliss
Christmas is coming, parang music playing
Cooler sunrise and evening sun not staying
While poinsettias litter sidewalks sales
Women purchase curtain by the bales
Christmas is coming, Poui trees in bloom
The country’s swept with yuletide broom
All over the place, office parties galore
Some bound to break new breathalyzer law
Christmas is coming, yes to Trinidad
Oh how we love this season real bad.

THE HOLIDAYS
Singing parang, soca parang
chutney parang, chinee parang
from November we forewarn
of Christmas morn.
That morn where a year's savings can evaporate
into gifts, decorations, punch a creme and black cake
when after all the fuss in six hours it passes.
You sit and wonder who's responsible? and who's washing the dishes?
By the time season over you gain ten pounds
tastin everybody hand including Bobo the clown
your liquor done, food done, decorations worn, money done
wondering if you gonna make it to February one.
With carnival on the approaching horizon the entire fiasco fades
Thank God for the opportunity though, for family time in the holidays.

A CHRISTMAS CHEER
MERRY, MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL,
TIME TO GET DRESSED AND RUSH TO THE MALL,
PULL OUT THAT LIST AND RUN TO THAT SHOP,
THERE IS NO TIME FOR CHIT CHAT, NO TIME TO STOP
WRAP UP THOSE PRESENTS AND PUT THEM UNDER THE TREE,
AND RELAX WITH SOME SORREL AND A SMOOTH MELODY
A CAROL SERVED WITH HAM AND FRUIT CAKE,
BEST OF THE SEASON MOM CAN EVER MAKE.
NOW COME TOGETHER AND MAKE THAT CHEER
MERRY CHRISTMAS, AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

MY CHRISTMAS BARBIE DOLL
Christmas brings out the little girl excitement in me
Would you believe I still write to Santa in all my glee
Dear Santa can I get a new doll for Christmas please
A Barbie who talks walks and bends her hands and knees.
But shhh don't tell anyone about this
I'm twenty-five years old, my name is Trish
I attend University studying child psychology
In this class we learn kids behave extra well to get their xmas toys and candy.
Santa is for real I know, I've seen him all the time
When the others are asleep I am up to hear the midnight chime
He comes down the chimney chubby in his red suit
To put barbie under the tree he's really a "sneaky brut."
I came out for Santa to see me, and he jumped when I said hello
He hugged me and I pulled his snowy white beard he said "ouch" ho ho ho.

CHRISTMAS TIME
Another time of end of years
Of baking scents and ginger beers
With punch de crème and hams with clove
And wrapping gifts while watching the stove
On the over-drive cleaning and painting whole day
A few hours away from Christmas day
Still have some time to take a drink with thee
Now begging help to mount your Christmas tree
Now its twelve o’clock on the dot
You are tired like hell but you cannot stop
Now your cell and landline are ringing off the hook
It is Christmas day in everyone’s book.

CHRISTMAS
In the city park I see,
A fifty foot singing Christmas tree
Singing all the songs I know
And hearing its voice where ever I go
When I shop for gifts in this busy town
Christmas voice is all around
Santa clause with his “ho ho” sounds
Make all the towns children gather around
“Don’t be naughty be your selves”
Santa says, also the elves
If you don’t behave and stay out of “troub”
Santa’s elves won’t have a job
Toy making will not exist
Also Santa’s long Christmas lists
So avoid the naughty and the wrong
Just listen to the Christmas song
I will shop for you, you will shop for me
While we listen to the singing tree

MY GUAVA CHRISTMAS TREE
Journeying through the old train line
Pair of rubber slippers persistent
Though we long lost sight of the last street sign.
Green like an ocean all around
Winds caress in the height of daylight
Eyes carefully searching and alas! IT IS FOUND.
I in all my glee embrace my Guava Christmas Tree,
White tissues to camouflage, young guavas dipped in glue and shine
Empty match boxes in Christmas Wrappers looked the prettiest, we agree.
I place the presents one by one under the Christmas Tree,
I can’t wait for Christmas Morning to play with my new Doll and Monopoly
Shhh! I had a peek at my presents and nobody knows but me!
